In that announcement, Microsoft also says that in the future, they will support OAuth 2.0 atop legacy protocols like IMAP. Only clients that support Modern Authentication/OAuth 2.0 will work. However, this will be mostly useless soon because in October 2020, Microsoft is disabling basic authentication to Exchange Online for all O365 customers.
